Always Book Your Train Tickets and Travel in the Train

When travelling in the train, you should always carry tickets. Travelling without a ticket is punishable by law. You have to pay a fine or spend 6 months in jail. A ticket is a proof that you have paid a prescribed amount of money and reserved a seat in the respective train.

Ticket reservation was a tedious business a few years ago, but with the intervention of new technology in this area, the procedures have been simplified to a great extent. The payment is made online by using your credit card and the e-ticket generated is e-mailed to you, the printed copy of which is required to be produced at the time of travelling. Nowadays, booking of train tickets over mobile phones with special applications is also gaining popularity.

Train Tickets have a number on top left corner called PNR number. After booking the ticket, this number is used in all dealings with the railways such as checking the seat availability, train timings or canceling the ticket. IRCTC is now encouraging the passengers to carry tickets in the electronic mode in their mobile phones or laptops instead of taking a printout on paper as this saves a lot of paper and thus the trees.
